First Aid & CPR Jamaica

In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. In Jamaica, for nurses continuing education is a legal condition of re-licensing, and for care roles a valid first-aid and CPR credential is expected on the job. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Health professionals: continuing education and up-to-date skills

Nurses and midwives in Jamaica are regulated by the Nursing Council of Jamaica under the Nurses and Midwives Act. Licences are renewed on a two-year cycle, and re-licensing is conditional on evidence of continuing-education activity — so keeping clinical and emergency skills current is part of remaining licensed to practise, not merely encouraged.

The professional duty to maintain competence and to be able to act in an emergency underpins this requirement. At renewal, the Council requires documented proof: verification of continuing-education activity forms and a completed summary, so that a nurse can show the activities undertaken are relevant to practice.

The Nursing Council of Jamaica requires 30 hours of continuing education over each two-year licence cycle, with documented evidence at biennial renewal (verification forms plus a summary). A CPR/BLS course taken through an accredited or recognized provider can count toward those hours, provided the activity meets the Council's criteria.

The requirement is met by any recognized continuing-education activity on an eligible topic. CPR/AED, ACLS (advanced cardiovascular life support) and PALS are among the eligible activities; other topics also qualify (for example safe prescribing, suicide prevention or violence prevention). A single course therefore both meets the obligation and counts toward your hours — provided you keep the proof.

How training becomes recognized

Not all activities are equal. For continuing education to be recognized by a professional order, it must meet specific criteria:

  • the instructor’s competence;
  • the relevance and quality of the content;
  • the training framework;
  • the quality of the material provided;
  • mechanisms to monitor and assess participation.

In Jamaica, these are the criteria the Nursing Council of Jamaica applies when accepting a continuing-education activity for biennial re-licensing. Our training is designed to meet these criteria.

Support and care staff: a certificate required to work

A CPR and first-aid course does not replace occupational training — it is added to it. To work with vulnerable people, a valid first-aid certificate is often required in addition to your professional training.

For support staff, occupational qualification and a first-aid credential go together. Care aides qualify through the national HEART/NSTA NVQ-J pathway, recognized across CARICOM and the Commonwealth. Employers and home-care agencies expect a valid recognized standalone CPR and first-aid certificate in addition to that qualification — a credential distinct from the NVQ, obtained and then renewed, kept current and verifiable.

Attestation, certificate and invoice: proof your training is recognized

On successful completion, you receive:

  • an official attestation;
  • a certificate of completion;
  • a detailed invoice;
  • online access to your documents for as long as your certification remains valid.

These documents are the proof to present to your professional order to credit your hours, or to your employer to demonstrate your compliance.
