Becoming a foster family in Jamaica means providing a safe, temporary home for a child through the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA). Applicants undergo a medical examination, are supervised by a social worker and must complete training offered by the Agency. Holding a current first-aid and CPR certificate is widely expected as part of caring for a child in your home.

Foster care in Jamaica is administered by the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA), which requires applicants to submit to a medical examination, accept supervision by a social worker and take part in the Agency's training and preparation. While the published requirements centre on suitability and this preparation, a recognized first-aid and CPR certificate is commonly expected so a carer can respond to everyday emergencies — injuries, choking, cardiac arrest — including CPR for children and infants.
Where required, the certificate is recognized by the CPFSA and kept current through periodic renewal. It is one element of caregiver readiness that supports — and does not replace — the medical check, home assessment and the parenting skills the Agency looks for.
